Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: hplip

My HP LJ 1018 has worked just fine in previous versions of Ubuntu, but
in hardy, it's a complete mess and barely working at all.

Starting from a clean slate (with firmware downloaded), I switch the
printer on and get the following log messages:

Apr 14 12:18:00 quest kernel: [254842.737086] usb 1-8: new high speed USB
device using ehci_hcd and address 31

Apr 14 12:18:01 quest /usr/sbin/hplj1018: foo2zjs: ... download successful.

So far, so normal.

I go into System -> Admin -> Printing and click "New Printer". This generates
the following log messages:
Apr 14 12:20:09 quest kernel: [254970.828899] ppdev0: registered pardevice
Apr 14 12:20:09 quest kernel: [254970.877792] ppdev0: unregistered pardevice

ret=-1
Apr 14 12:20:11 quest kernel: [254973.214098] ppdev0: unregistered pardevice

Which I assume is related to LPT, so that's fine. The first device in
the resulting list is "HP LaserJet 1018 USB KP0VDES HPLIP"; Forward
gives me HP; Forward gives me HP LaserJet 1018 Foomatic/foo2zjs and then
the printer is set up. I get the following log message (probably
irrelevant?):

Apr 14 12:21:30 quest cupsd[6104]: *** WARNING *** The program 'cupsd' uses the
Apple Bonjour compatibility layer of Avahi.
Apr 14 12:21:30 quest cupsd[6104]: *** WARNING *** Please fix your application
to use the native API of Avahi!
Apr 14 12:21:30 quest cupsd[6104]: *** WARNING *** For more information see
<http://0pointer.de/avahi-compat?s=libdns_sd&e=cupsd>

So now I try and print something. File -> Print, leave the defaults,
and ...

but nothing comes out of the printer.

Those first two lines and the last line look pretty suspicious to me.

It's probably worth noting that in previous releases, I never used HPLIP
for this printer and it was set up direct to USB.
