thanks for your reply i have recently removed linux and unfortunately installed windows xp again, the laptop was my girlfriends and she loved Ubuntu but couldn't deal without sound for so long so i had to change it back for her sorry for your efforts and many thanks for the both of us for trying to sort the issue
