After a reboot the sharing GUI appears to work. I did not do anything at
the command prompt as root except apt-get install nautilus-share. The
resolution seems to be:

1. Install the nautilus-share package.
2. Reboot the system.

There is no message to the effect that #2 is necessary, the sharing GUI
just complains as described above:

'net usershare' returned error 255: net usershare: cannot open usershare
directory /var/lib/samba/usershares. Error Permission denied

If nautilus-share will be "in the box" with the final Hardy Heron that's
probably the end of the matter. If it isn't, though, then the post-
install steps need to be fixed so a reboot is unnecessary or clarified
so that the user knows it is. And it ought to be possible to find this
package via the add/remove GUI.
