My understanding is that ntpdate is a simplified version of ntp/ntpd. It is
said somewhere that ntpdate is suitable for environments such as laptops which
are not connected 24/7 to the internet. However, I have a desktop, sometimes
running as server, and a flat fee internet connection, in which case ntpd is
more suitable.
Furthermore, ntpdate seems to be less relevant than ntp and even scheduled for
deletion (
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/system-tools-backends/+bug/83604/comments/14
 )

I cannot uninstall ntpdate and only keep ntp, since that would break
ubuntu-minimal and therefore the whole automatic update/dependency process.
There also seem to be other dependency problems involving the ntpdate/ntp pair
(e.g., bug #83604).

Yes, starting with that Gutsy upgrade, my clock update ran havoc, see bug
#91418 and especially bug #158664.

So I do not believe this bug is invalid.
(Unless you tell me there is a third, unknown method besides ntpdate and ntp
that has been automatically installed my Gutsy?)
