Can you check the permissions on your .mozilla-thunderbird folder and
the sub-folders in your home directory? You can do this with the
following commad:
ls -l ~/.mozilla-thunderbird/
Everything should be owned by you.

On 64-bit Hardy Heron beta, Thunderbird does not retain profile -- and cannot
create one in the default folder due to permissions problem.
