Here's an update because Hardy is so near release. I finally downloaded a copy of hardy-desktop-amd64.iso (beta). Unfortunately I am unable to connect to the wireless network using it. This could simply be because the network was out of IP addresses (only class B on a campus) or for technical reasons. I was too fed up at this point to tinker anymore.
I decided to try to compile the iwlwifi-1.2.25 driver along with the mac80211-10.0.4 subsystem. After a lot of frustration and many Google searches I gave up because "make" for both complains that it can't find a "Makefile" in my kernel directory (/lib/modules/2.6.22-14-generic/). Other people have had this problem too. I installed a ton of stuff trying to see if I was missing packages it needed but nothing helped. I wasn't about to go diving into code to fix the problem. So instead I downloaded compat-wireless-2008-04-08 and to my utter shock and astonishment it compiled with no problems. I've been running under it for a day and a half down without the fatal crashes I originally reported. The problem may have a workaround. I'll post an update in a few days when I know for sure. -- Intel 3945 WLAN (802.11a/g) Mini Card randomly drops network. Irrecoverable.
