I've solved the problem for me by putting 'blacklist video' into
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist and rebooting. Now i'm able to adjust the
brightness everytime, and when gnome-power-manager is running, it
displays an indicator when i press the keys. It also remains capable of
adjusting the brightness when it wants to, for example, on pluggin the
AC adapter.
