Is this still a problem with the latest Hardy kernel?
The CPU is missing also when Virtualbox is not running, correct?
Does "sudo modprobe -r vboxdrv" fix it? Or rebooting, but without loading the 
vboxdrv module? (e.g. by de-activating the vboxdrv init script or removing the 
virtualbox-ose-modules-* package temporarily).

Have you looked around at the resources linked at
http://www.virtualbox.org/wiki/Community, if it's a known/already
reported problem?
