I am having the same issue (different sound card). I'll provide as much
info as I can in hopes that it helps.

First, I did have sound on Hardy when I first upgraded to it from Gutsy.
Sound went away in the last 3 or 4 days (don't know exactly when). I am
up-to-date on all updates as of now (Package manager does not report the
need for any updates as of 5 minutes ago).

alsamixer reports the same exact error as shown above. Also, kmix
reports "mixer cannot be found" Also, I do not have a /dev/snd or
/dev/dsp or /dev/mixer (I used to when sound worked). I imagine this is
related in some way.

My sound card is (based on output of "lspci | grep -i audio"):
00:14.2 Audio device: ATI Technologies Inc IXP SB4x0 High Definition Audio
Controller (rev 01)

uname -a reports:
Linux KitchenLinux 2.6.24-16-generic #1 SMP Thu Apr 10 13:23:42 UTC 2008 i686
GNU/Linux

I will attach the output from lsmod below, as well as the Alsa-info.txt
file. Please let me know what else I can provide, or any tests that I
can run to help debug this.

Thanks,
Rob
