Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: debian-installer

Ubuntu 8.04 (Hardy) RC-1 alternate AMD64 installation cd.
After booting, installer fails to load installer components.
Log shows errors that suggest bad media, like:
"sr0 add sense logical unit communication CRC error (Ultra-DMA/32)"
and
"end_request: I/O error, dev sr0, sector 988"
ending with:
anna [852]: WARNING**: bad md5sum
when trying to read from media.
Trying to check media for defects from install menu also shows that Packages.gz
fails to pass md5sum check
BUT:
iso image passess md5 sum check, and (two) burned disks also pass md5sum check
done by mounting install media on working system (ubuntu 7.10 amd64) on same
physical machine (same drive, same media), doing md5sum -c md5sum.txt.
Also same installation disk passes that point in installation, if doing
installation inside vmware player using same machine, media, and drive.
Seems like kernel used by installer has problems accessing my DVD drive or
talking to IDE controller.
I haven't actually managed to install hardy, and do not know is this problem in
installer itself or kernel used in Ubuntu 8.04 in general, but that would be
something new. I have been using intensively Ubuntu on the same machine since
6.06 (also Debian, all of them amd64) with no problems using DVD
My DVD is Pioneer DVD-RW DVR-111D, I attach my lspci output.
Is there some workaround, i.e. to disable DMA access to drive during
installation to see if that changes anything?
Best regards,
Predrag Gavrilovic
