I fixed it on my machine. I was using dual mons and hardy .16 kernel removed the nvidia drivers. I went into recovery mode and X recovered itself and backed up my xorg.conf and replaced it with somethign fairly generic and useless. BUT, I could now boot into hard kernel .16. Unfortunately both my monitors were showing the same thing. So much for dual mons.
I got it working again though without much trouble. I went to system preferences, appearance, anmd I saw I was running in non-3d mode. So I set it to "normal" this prompted me to install the nvidia driver. Which it did successfully. I then copied my old xorg.conf back from the backup and rebooted. All was fine with my dual mons again.
