if it helps your investigations, 8.4 is the first in the 8.x series that works reliably for me on suspend/resume and various crashes/hangs I was getting on any earlier version of fglrx. I have now had a 5 or 6 days of uptime on 8.4 and multiple suspend/resumes (with no changes to the acpi defaults about post video/save state, etc.) with absolutely no issues. This is all on hardy latest (-16 kernel, etc.) on an older chipset (FireGL Mobility T2), so YMMV as usual
