This is not Ubuntu bug. The acpi does not work on pre-2000 computers for
purpose, and without it it's expected to work very poorly. It might run
though if you had non-acpi kernel to start with. Perhaps the
installation from the server discs might succeed? One would still have
to add the graphical environment on top of it.
