Unfortunately, getting a new major upstream release into Hardy won't be
possible - unless it fixes a security issue - whereas getting a point
release with only one small change for DDC implementation and an
autoreconf stands much better chances of getting accepted.

Figuring out what produces the inconsistencies in how X 1.4 deals with
"geode" between "Xorg -configure" (finds the right driver and prints a
configuration that uses "geode"), X without xorg.conf (reverts to
"vesa") and calling the driver as "amd" via a symbolic link (fails in
Hardy LTSP) is also the sort of bugfixing that stands good chances of
being acceptable for8.04.1 (Hardy point release one), but a new major
upstream X with all the fixes already included would not be accepted.
