maybe it is hardware related (but could all be chance).
the laptop is new to me, it came with 2x256MB. i swapped one of those for a new 
1GB module. all the crashes (and the memchecks) where with the mixed ram.

yesterday i swapped back to the original memory, and have not had the
crash or bag page message since. i have been running md5sum in a loop on
4 ISO files (ie bigger than RAM) for several hours, just to torture the
ram.

for each of, 2x256, 256+1024 and 1024 memcheck says the speed is:
132MHz CAS 2.5-3-3
so they seem to be the same speed ram.

if mixing ram is the issue why would memcheck not pick it up?
