I have finally figured out how to solve the problem.  I opened up gconf-
editor to find the key /apps/gnome-power-manager/action_button_suspend.
It was set to the value "nothing".  I changed that to "suspend".  That
solved the problem.

Therefore this bug reduces to the question (perhaps for upstream): is
that the default value for that key?  Or how did I end up with that
value in that particular key -- I've never edited gconf-editor before.

I think the default action for the suspend key should be to suspend --
and not to silently ignore the button.  This is specially important
given that the other special keys (display on/off, wireless kill switch,
lock-screen, etc.) on the thinkpad actually do work.
