Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: pulseaudio

Running a Soundblaster Live! Value PCI card on a fresh 8.04
installation. PulseAudio 0.9 by default configures to only use 2
channels on this card. The Soundblaster Live! Value PCI has a 4 output,
but the rear speakers were inoperative.

None of the ALSA mixer settings would bring the rear speakers to life.

The only way to resolve the issue is to edit /etc/pulse/daemon.conf,
uncommment and change the line "default-sample-channels" to read "4"
instead of "2", then restart the PulseAudio daemon by way of 'pulseaudio
-k; pulseaudio -D"

This issue may well affect other multi-channel soundcards.
