My contribution: I also lost sound (test sound, startup sound, shutdown sound) after a clean install of Kubuntu 8.04 64-bit (and a restart). Was unable to get System Settings -> Sound System -> Test Sound to play until (after perusing forums) I set "Auto-suspend if idle after" to 1 second. Also, after setting Audacious->Audio->"Current output plugin" to "PulseAudio Output Plugin" I lost sound until I set it to "ALSA Output Plugin". I understand that Audacious is not the problem here, but I figured I'd mention anything which might help diagnose this issue.
