Public bug reported:
A month ago I installed Ubuntu 6.06 on my Toshiba L100.This is my first linux
install. Evertything is just fine except for the ethernet RTL8139. When I copy
large files the network adapter just hungs and I have no network connectivity
at all. The same things happens even with low traffic activity after 3-4 hours.
I installed the latest official updates via update manager. Kernel is
2.6.15.-27. I read all posts and tried:
1. #ifdown eth0
#ifup eth0
The interface will come back only after restart
2. I noticed two drivers installed 8139too and 8139cp. My ethernet controller
will work only with 8139too, so I removed 8139cp.Still the same result
#ifdown eth0
#rmmod 8139cp
#rmmod 8139too
#modprobe 8139too
#ifup eth0
3. Tried turning off acpi by adding acpi=off or pci=noacpi. I cannot boot at
all with this two options. Then tried noacpi and was able to boot to gnome, but
the problem was there.
4. I installed kernel 2.6.18 and installed 8139 in kernel
(not as module). This resulted in little better performace. Now I can copy in
70% of the cases a 500MB file.
5. Tried driver from Knoppix, but versions were different when I checked
dmesg. BTW with Knoppix 4.02 and 5.01 it works perfectly.
I see other people have the same problem without resolution:
