Same problem. Synaptic is looking for the cd drive to be mounted at /cdrom. I believe in in Gutsy this was a link "/cdrom" to /media/cdrom0 where the drive is actually mounted. (Note, that it might actually not now mount at this location since it appears that we are back to fstab change the letters of /dev/hdxx, /dev/sdxx etc. hell ???) Synaptic is unable to navigate the link. It expects drive to be mounted! at this point. A link will not work even if it actually points to a valid mount point. For some reason if one messes with fstab, fstab will refuse to mount it at this location(/cdrom). The solution I found is to delete the /cdrom link, create a /cdrom folder and then to manually mount the cd drive using I believe(sorry I forgot exactly how I did it) "sudo mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom".
