Same problem. Synaptic is looking for the cd drive to be mounted at /cdrom.
I believe in in Gutsy this was a link "/cdrom" to /media/cdrom0 where the drive
is actually mounted.
(Note, that it might actually not now mount at this location since it appears
that we are back to fstab change
the letters of /dev/hdxx, /dev/sdxx etc. hell ???)
Synaptic is unable to navigate the link. It expects drive to be mounted! at
this point. A link will not work
even if it actually points to a valid mount point. For some reason if one
messes with fstab,
fstab will refuse to mount it at this location(/cdrom). The solution I found
is to delete the /cdrom link, create a /cdrom folder
and then to manually mount the cd drive using I believe(sorry I forgot exactly
how I did it) "sudo mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom".
