It may be that the correct solution for intrepid, now that we're past
the point where we need to support upgrades from pre-UUID versions of
Ubuntu, is to simply drop the migration code in update-grub since it
really shouldn't be needed for hardy->intrepid upgrades.  I think it's
going to be easier to prove the correctness of such a change than to try
to patch the existing code to selectively mangle kopt - though of course
that won't solve this issue for users of hardy.

I understand the case for non-UUID-based root if you're not using an
initramfs.  Can someone explain to me why UUIDs are a problem in
practice for RAID configurations, though?  Is this a question of the
UUID being incorrectly interpreted as belonging to the physical volume
instead of the RAID group?  If so, I think that's a much more serious
bug in the UUID detection which needs to be corrected there, regardless
of any changes to update-grub.
