On a clean install of Ubuntu 8.04 LTS Alternative (text), upon first
boot, it terminates with the following message:

This kernel requires the following features not present on the CPU:

Please use a kernel that is compatible with your system.

I believe that a server edition of Ubuntu should support VIA C3, as it
makes an ideal low-power small form-factor server.
