Also (Ubuntu 7.10, Writer 2.3) I have the same problem, font changes being applied, then not able to turn them off again. Whether using keyboard shortcuts, or clicking the italic button on the toolbar, or going to the Format menu and using Format Character, sometimes the font gets "stuck" in Italics, and won't toggle off again. Sometimes selecting the text that's in the wrong font, and clicking the toolbar button, will correct it. But what a nuisance of a workaround!
