I have just tried installing the fglrx ATI driver instead of the radeon
open source driver and this made no difference. I have also tried
suspending/resuming after the following:
/etc/init.d/gdm stop
killall NetworkManager
rmmod iwl3945 iwlwifi_80211 fglrx
in an attempt to see if it was the graphics or wireless drivers that
were not suspending correctly but this also made absolutely no
difference to the observed behaviour.
