Hi, I have an HP Pavilion dv6747. It has an Intel HDA Chipset and I have had the same problem but followed stereoit's instructions and got it working.
What I did was dble click on the volume control which opened the task bar. Only the play back tab was avalible. Went to edit>preferences and ticked everything Then went back and looked at the recording tab and changed both "Capture" and "Digital" to about 75%. I also edited the "Front Mic Boost" to about 50% Also went to the options tab and changed it to "Front Mic" (oringally was "Mic"). This got the inbuilt mic working. I have no external mic to test with. Also the recordings in audacity all need normalising, it might have something to do with the front mic boost but i really have no idea.
