Do you need those extra options in your xorg.conf?
Option "VideoOverlay" "on"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
Please try without them. Try also the Ubuntu 8.04 live CD.
Uninstall compiz if you're not able to disable it. Please attach a new
Xorg.0.log
