I think Brasero is needed because it's the only thing that lets you burn
an audio CD, for example. Previously Serpentine was used for that but it
had some issues and was not being developed. Also, although I like the
simplicty of the nautilus burn features, Brasero is a good all-in-one
burning app. New users to ubuntu always seem to look for that. They'll
be a bit disappointed with the features provided by just nautilus I
think, but may not find their way to installing Brasero themselves.
Probably they will install something less appropriate, as usually
happens with new users, they aren't able to find the app that will work
best for them if it's not there by default.
