Public bug reported:
Binary package hint: gparted
I had a primary partition for my windows install a primary partition for
my linux install, and then an extended partition containing swap and an
NTFS partition for all my data. Using gparted, I attempted to move the
linux install to within the extended partition by deleting linux,
growing the extended partition, and then recreating the partition again
inside. Unfortunately gparted failed, and now the entire extended
partition is reported as unallocated. I was luckily able to restore the
NTFS partition using some tool, and the resize was successful on the
second try.
The reason I think gparted failed was that after setting up the
operations, I mounted a couple of the affected drives to quickly
transfer some files, and then forgot to unmount them before hitting
apply. I did not want to try reproducing this for obvious reasons, but
if this is the cause I think a rescan is necessary before gparted
actually begins operations, as it can lead to huge data loss.
