Sorry,  I should have been more specific. I meant ~/.fonts.conf
To reproduce the bug, create ~/.fonts.conf with the following, and then log out 
and in:

<?xml version="1.0"?>
<!DOCTYPE fontconfig SYSTEM "fonts.dtd">
<fontconfig>
<match target="font" >
<edit mode="assign" name="antialias"> <bool>false</bool> </edit>
</match>
</fontconfig>

Upon switching this back to "true" and logging out and back in, the
display errors cease.
