It happens for me as well. No Shadows with compiz+emerald.
However, if i Disable nvidia driver from the restricted modules, and
download and install the driver from the nvidia website, it works. But
that problem with that is that after some ubuntu updates, the nvidia
driver stops working, and i have to reinstall it.
