This is a feature: we open attachments read-only to avoid loss when
people modify them, save them, and quit Claws Mail (thus destroying
their modified file). There's an hidden preference if you want to open
documents read/write: save_parts_readwrite=1 in ~/.claws-mail/clawsrc
(to modify when Claws isn't running).
