Could you do

  gnome-mount -vbd /dev/sdb1  # mount the drrive
  gnome-umount -vbd /dev/sdb1 # unmount the drive again

(or whatever the device is) a couple of times until the first command
fails to mount it? Can you copy&paste the output from it here?
