Summary:
- When connected to a wireless network, the "Connection Information" window
displays inaccurate speed information about the present connection.
Steps to reproduce:
- Connect to wireless network.
- Right click on signal strength meter in menubar.
- Select "Connection Information".
- Observe value under "Speed".
Comments:
- I presume this is a bug related to Network Manager, though it is possible
it's related to the wireless driver itself. If someone more knowledgeable than
I could verify this is being reported properly, I would be much obliged.
- This is one of the first bugs I've reported; if I've somehow made an error or
omission, I apologize in advance and will be glad to correct it if possible.
- On my system, the reported speed is consistently lower than the actual speeds
available. See the attached screenshot for an example: 16Mb/sec transfers
should be impossible if the maximum speed reported by Connection Information is
correct. Fast downstream connections like those reported are routinely achieved
on my connection, although the Connection Information pane consistently shows
low values for speed.
- The screenshot reflects the status of my connection to my home wireless
network (802.11g, secured with WPA-TKIP). Using the WPA2-Enterprise (with AES)
network at the local university, similar erroneous speeds are reported. Again,
actual throughput is higher than reported in Connection Information.
- When using ndiswrapper with the Windows XP driver (bcmwl5.inf) under Ubuntu
7.10, a more reasonable (30-54Mb/sec) speed was reported.
