I don't know if this is related, but now I'm running Hardy with compiz and emerald turned off, and the desktop is still behaving sluggishly. Before, I was running the Hardy RC (updated with every update available), and yesterday I did a clean install of Hardy 8.04 final. Oh, and reloading Metacity doesn't help, either.
