the problem returned after a couple of days... (although not as bad as before - a couple of page were printed OK before the problem appeared)
now setting the resolution to "draft" did not help. I tried to print this file: http://www.wingsgoclub.org/books/StrongerPlayer.pdf with evince, printing 2 pages on a single page to preserve paper This time the printer prints the first 2 pages OK with the "high quality option", but for the third paper only one third got out. When I moved to "draft" quality, the first 4 pages came out OK, but the fifth only contained the top part.
