Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and help to improve
Ubuntu.
Can you tell me whether /boot/initrd-2.6.24-16-generic exists on your
system? The only case I see where update-grub would fail to add the
initrd line to menu.lst is if the initrd itself doesn't exist for some
reason.
