Ilja patch have not done to me any good. I have the same problem with
my Radeon 9550: at any atempt to either switch a user or to logout, the
system freezes completely. The only way to get out of it is Alt-
PrintScrn-RSEIUB. And even with this I have to hold each key quite for
a bit otherwise there is no reaction.

I also tried several other workarounds proposed by different people
having similar trouble. None of them did not work for me.

I've looked through the Ilija's patch and as far as I can see it is
quite undestandable why it helps only KDE folks. I'm running GNOME
without any KDE traces on it. The directories referenced by the patch
simply do not exsist on my machine. Exactly the same whay as the ATI
original file directories for xmd/kmd do not.

I've switched to using Open Source ATI driver and do not have any
problems with it so far.

I think it's a shame that LTS release get out with a such a crapy
restricted driver proposed. I do understand that this is mostly ATI
falt but the driver was supposed to undergo a minimal test before being
included into LTS release and proposed for use.
