Yes your right the "Old version" is definitely a work around. It would be nice to see the bug resolved though because on my WinXP machine both modes run fine.
On a side note I have also found the performance to be oddly better with my NVIDIA GeForce 8600GT with the open source drivers than the nvidia- glx-new drivers from restricted.
