Now I moved to Hardy Heron, but I also I don't use J-pilot any more, I have 
moved to evolution,
Before doing so, I did a workaround: instead of starting J-Pilot directly I did 
the following script 
sleep 10;  jpilot 

Having a delay gives time to startup the gnome-panels before the jpilot 
starts... (jpilot also can display some alarms at startup...) and
with this delay it seems that it does not fail (in ubuntu 7.10)..  but as it 
failed from time to time I can not be sure of it.....
