This bug is new in Hardy.

Description:
After a few (5-10) minutes of heavy load, Ubuntu reboots (root sends shutdown
-R now). Like a dumbass, I renamed shutdown. Then, a hard reboot occurs after
10-20 minutes. Watching the CPU temperature shows it skating 100 C, which is
the critical temperature. This is also the temperature which causes the fans
to run at high speed in hardy. This temperature is obviously far too high.
Not sure what temperature causes the hard reboots; I'd rather not keep doing
that to my machine.

Furthermore:
i8kutils can be used to control fan speed on this laptop using "i8kctl fan 2 2"
This sets the fans to maximum speed (0=off 1=low 2=high). This fails as a
workaround because:
1) Other things like to change the fan speed back to lower settings
2) Over time, the fans slow down even at maximum speed level (2). This is
detectable by running the command "i8kctl fan 2 2" again after 10 seconds; an
audible fan spin up can be heard. Not sure if this is related to the above
mismanagement or not.

The above also means that programs such as gkrellm, i8kmon, and dellfand
which control the fans fail, as they don't continuously reassert the fan
speed.

Workaround:
Write a script to continuously reassert maximum fan speed.
