I am finally able to get the resolution I want, to to so I had to.
1) Open the Screen and Graphics i.e. displayconfig-gtk
2) Select LCD panel with resolution 1360x768. At this point I am offered
resolutions of at most 1024x768.
3) Restart X, i.e. log out and log in. (I'm not sure if this step is necessary.)
4) At this point displayconfig-gtk should have made a new xorg.conf, but which
has problems. You should now Backup /etc/X11/xorg.conf.
5) Next open xorg.conf as root. In Section "Monitor" remove all the modeline
lines.
6)In Section "Display" on the Modes line add the resolution and frequency you
want.

Please see attached xorg.conf. All the changes I made are preceeded by
#<!>.

N.b. One probably shouldn't attempt this for older screens.
