I'll see if I can try some other applications, but what you suggested there wouldn't show anything, since any 2 channel sound is merely output to all speakers. Even if i could find a 6-channel sound to test it on, most of these sort of applications, from poking around somewhat, will only output as if 2 speakers existed anyway (eg mplayer's default action is to downmix 5.1 channel sound to 2 channels, iirc)
