Thank you for your continued testing. This beast is indeed hard to pinpoint. I have had a similar experience than you. The situation was fixed once for me by going back to the last known good version (comment 27). Subsequently, the problem would stay, even after a downgrade.
BTW, ubuntu also never forgets any binary release they made: http://blog.leggewie.org/?p=24.
