Here's my story that I think is closely related to the bug report here,
if not the same:
I'm running Ubuntu Hardy (final) on a Compaq Presario V2610CA laptop,
with an ATI Xpress 200M card. I'm using the fglrx ATI proprietary
driver (available with the Ubuntu restricted manager) and desktop
effects (Compiz) are enabled.
The problem is that as soon as Compiz is enabled, I can't play video
using Totem (and within Firefox, using totem-plugin). Sound is working
however. The problem doesn't occur if I use the open source driver,
i.e. the ati (radeon) driver.
In order to correct the problem, I found that I have to issue the
command "gstreamer-properties" within a terminal, then click the "video"
tab, and chose "X video system (without xv)", instead of the
"autodetect" setting in the "video output" section.
The same problem (and the same solution) applies for mplayer video
playback.
The problem occurs whether or not I set VideoOverlay to "on" or "off" in
my xorg.conf file (and whether this option is present or not). Here's
the appropriate section of my xorg.conf file:
Section "Device"
Identifier "aticonfig-Device[0]"
Driver "fglrx"
Option "VideoOverlay" "off"
Option "OpenGLOverlay" "off"
EndSection
