  This problem arose after upgrading from Gutsy to Hardy.  Through the

  I connected my headphones to the speaker jack, and it is fine there.
  The loudness of this tone and the blips is unaffected by the volume

  My motherboard, which has the sound controllers, is an Asus P5B, with
  the intel p965 express chipset.
  
  I looked at the bootup sequence by pressing ctrl+alt+f1.  The problem
  begins right after the hardware drivers are loaded.
  
  ok, I'm looking at the box.  It looks like the audio chipset is ADI
  AD1988A 8-channel High Definition Audio CODEC?
