I did some additional testing (with live cd etc to get a clean repro)
and it turns out that since my main machine has swfdec it will show the
error I describe in step 2. Also, the yellow bar with the "Want to
install missing plugins?" does not appear because Firefox actually
thinks that swfdec can play the movie content (which is clearly is not
capable of).

It's a shame that swfdec and gnash isn't mature enough yet, it seems
that people is tricked into thinking that swfdec and/or gnash are
"equivalent" to the closed source flash plugin. It's of course easy to
believe that because Firefox doesn't HTML rendering brilliantly, so why
not Flash?
