ok, I've found an old vanilla brand USB keyboard and tested - the F1 - F12 keys work fine.
So it seems that something in the upgrade from Gutsy to Hardy has caused the function keys on the Apple keyboard (F1 - F19) to stop working. I'm not even sure if this is a KDE bug anymore ?
