Michael, Did you add the "SHMConfig true" command to the xorg.conf file? I did after getting the error message and this allowed me to open the synaptics touchpad app under Preferences where I could then adjust the settings. I have to turn "tapping" off as it drives me nuts selecting things I don't want selected. This worked fine for me after the change made to xorg.conf.
