With compiz enabled, jackd reports excessive XRUNs, even with the
realtime kernel.

Disabling compiz in favour of metacity improves performance but not
latency. Naturally, as compiz is a significant 'wow-factor' drawcard of
Ubuntu (that actually has useful features, rather than just eye-candy),
it's an irritating problem. After all, OS X manages a 3D-accelerated
desktop AND a low-latency audio server!

Latency in general in Hardy seem to be higher than Gutsy - I was able to
run my Behringer UCA202 at 11.6ms rather than the current 69.7ms (which
still XRUNs like crazy, making it virtually impossible to demonstrate to
clients in a live context)

Specs on the UCA202 are available here:
http://www.behringer.com/UCA202/index.cfm?lang=ENG - it's been supported
by ALSA for quite some time...
