Well, as I feared, smartctl did not make it into Hardy presumably
because the other request wanted all of smartd daemon, not just the
ability to query your disks for their current health status.
A Google for "howto add ubuntu live dvd mage files" provides a lot of noise and
leads to this page for Ubuntu:

but that is empty.
Anyone have pointers for how to add a single binary to the live DVD and
then re-build it?
